The Digestive System
Every organism absorbs food. However, not all organism digest food in similar ways. The digestive system takes food and converts it into small molecules that can be used by any cell of the body. There are four different stages that are involved in the Digestive System. The four different stages are Ingestion, Digestion, Absorption, and Elimination. Ingestion is when an organism consumes the food and opens the digestive tract. During Digestion food is broken down in two ways. Mechanical Digestion and Chemical Digestion. Mechanical digestion is when large pieces of food are broken down into smaller pieces. Chemical Digestion is when enzymes break down small food molecules so that the body could use them. Next is Absorption and this is when cells take the small food molecules and use them. Finally Elimination occurs and this is when the food leaves the body as feces.
There are no two organisms that eat the same food and digest it the same way. This website was created to show how specific organisms digest the food they eat.
