Echinodermata comes from Latin which means "spiny-skinned."
Echinodermata are known for their interlocking calcium carbonate plates and spines, knows as stereom.
Types of Echinodermata:
star fish, sea cucumbers and sand dollars
There are approximately 7,000 species of Echinodermata, and they only live in salt water
Digestion
In echinodermatas, digestion starts when food enters the mouth located on the underside of the body or the stomach is extended out of the mouth where tube feet pass it food. Digestive glands called pyloric caeca help with digestion by secreting enzymes which digest food and absorbing vitamins needed. Waste is passed through the small intestine out the anus located on the upper part of the body.
