Sand Dollar Digestion
The sand dollar has a complete digestive system including a mouth, gut and anus. The sand dollar will position itself in the sand at an angle so that it can catch food flowing by in the water current. Cilia at the bottom of the sand dollar move water containing food and nutrients into the sand dollar's mouth. The water is filtered in the gut and digestive enzymes break down the food and absorb the nutrients. Waste is excreted out of the anus.
